SmartDate was created to give users a better way to meet singles. There are many different ways to meet people online however this can be risky sometimes. It is easy to hide behind the anonymity of the internet. When people actually meet in person, they often find that their date is not who they claimed to be while interacting in the virtual world. Although an awkward date is bad enough, there is also the danger of meeting someone with ulterior motives. SmartDate helps users hook up in a way that is safe and smart. The sophisticated system helps link singles that are compatible. SmartDate is also the first online dating system that gives users a way to meet singles within their social network. This helps take some of the risk out of meeting people online.
SmartDate was founded in March of 2010 by Fabrice Le Parc. Based out of Paris, France, the current team consists of over 20 individuals, including CTO Stefan Surzycki, Product Manager Swann Robbes, and Marketing Managers Laurie Anne Moussier and Virginie Beauge Allix. Le Parc states that he found love online and created SmartDate as a way to help others do the same.
The whole online dating concept has been done time and time again with mixed results. Some people meet up, fall in love and wind up taking it further. This can be a beautiful thing because these individuals may have never met without the internet. On the other hand, there are many situations where people wind up going on nightmare dates or even finding themselves in a bad situation because they hooked up online. SmartDate gives users a way to hook up online with singles that are found in their social network. Going on a first date with someone that the people you know are familiar with can dramatically reduce the chances of a bad hook up.
The SmartDate website has an attractive, simple design that uses bold red highlights and a lot of white background. Full color images of singles flash by while menus help the user find what they need. The site is well organized and free of clutter or annoying banner advertisements. A new user can quickly locate the tools they need to start searching for love on SmartDate.
A visitor can become a SmartDate user by clicking the green “Sign Up” button at the center of the homepage. Another blue button can be found along the right hand side for users who would like to sign in using Facebook. Before clicking the green button, the user is asked to choose what gender they are and what gender they are interested in meeting. The next form asks the user to provide more information about themselves, including a first and last name, date of birth, height, email address, and a password. After entering the information and clicking the green “Done” button, the user can upload a photo for their profile (this step is optional).
A new user can create a SmartDate account and begin browsing singles for free. There are three premium paid membership options as well. The system seems to take the negative aspects of other subscription services and apply them all. For example, with most sites, when a user pays for a longer period of service, they still get access to all features but pay a higher rate on a per month basis. Other sites offer different rates on a monthly basis only, but vary the features that come with each account. SmartDate does both. Users who choose to pay for one month pay significantly more (over three times more in fact), and still get fewer features. The one month subscription runs about $60 and includes up to six photos, search features, unlimited conversations and “winks,” top search result ranking, viewing history, and photo privacy settings. A three month subscription runs about $30 per month and upgrades to include a success guarantee. The one year subscription runs about $15 per month and adds a 24/7 VIP concierge feature.
SmartDate provides many features for an anxious single. The social network singles feature can be a big help in finding people that know someone the user knows. SmartDate does not offer any other unique features compared to other dating sites. The price is also very expensive for users who prefer to subscribe on a month by month basis.
